GARY HILL: A YORKSHIRE LAD WITH A BACKGROUND IN THE BUILDING TRADE.

BASED NEAR YORK, LIKE ANY YORKSHIRE MAN, HE’S NOT AFRAID OF ‘HARD GRAFT’.

Gary in training –
Ice climbing on Snowdonia.

Gary is a hard working Yorkshire lad who loves nothing better than a challenge to test his abilities and push the boundaries. Yet like many of us, Gary has experienced various obstacles in life, including several bereavements in close succession, losing his home and battling through depression.

Gary says:
“I like to be open and honest about the struggles I’ve had: many of us experience them at some point in our lives.

I reached a very low ebb and I would like to say to anyone in that position – don’t give up. Life is worth living.

Following a very difficult time, I now believe anything is possible if you are dedicated enough.

There is also support out there. Being in a dark, lonely place means you feel isolated. From one who knows, there IS support and help available.

I wouldn’t be here today without my wonderful wife, family, friends, and professionals who pulled me back from the edge.

Taking on the Explorers Grand Slam is probably the ultimate way I can show everyone my appreciation for their love and support.

My decision to fundraise for Help for Heroes is based on my admiration for these brave men and women who put their lives on the line for us.

From dark times, I recovered my strength, determination and a will to help others.

While I’ve always been physically active, climbing was new to me two years ago. I found a peace and tranquillity in climbing in some of the most beautiful places on earth.

I also want to help people who are suffering with life issues. There is no stigma, there is hope; there is a tomorrow.”

“It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.”
